Chevron Richmond Black History Awareness Committee Scholarship Program

Since 2004 the Chevron Richmond Black Employee Network (BEN) has awarded over 40 scholarships to deserving high school students from the West Contra Costa Unified School District.   Funding for the scholarships is provided by Chevron Richmond Policy, Government & Public Affairs (PGPA) department in partnership with the Richmond Black History Awareness Celebration (BHAC) Committee.  The scholarship is given in honor of Dr. William F. King.  Dr. King is a distinguished African American Chemical Engineer and Chevron employee of 27+ years (retired 2003).  He has also served as a Chevron recruiter, mentor and community activist.

It is an ongoing mission of Chevron to invest in programs that help students achieve their educational goals; improve access to a quality education; and to provide an academic gateway for students who are historically underserved or under-represented.

 

Eligibility & Application Requirements:
The scholarships are awarded to seniors demonstrating scholastic achievement, leadership skills, and community involvement. Applicants must have an overall minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (4.0 scale) and plan to attend a 2 or 4-year college or university in the next academic school year. Applicants must complete an application and submit a typed 500-750 word double-spaced essay on one of the following: 1) how an event in Black history had an impact on their life; 2) how current extracurricular or community service activities are used to positively impact the community; or 3) how their academic and/or leaderships skills will be used to enrich the future.

 

The application requires the students to list information regarding their community involvement and leadership skills.
The eligible schools in West Contra Costa Unified School District are: DeAnza, El Cerrito, Hercules,
Kennedy, Middle College, Pinole Valley, Richmond, and Sylvester Greenwood Academy.

 

All packets must be received by email on or before January 23, 2018. Students must submit completed application packets. Incomplete, hand-delivered or mailed scholarship packets will not be considered. 2018 CHevron BHAC Scholarship Application Extension
